The headline numbers
Last updated 24 August 2026. We re-run this page every January, and the figures below were pulled fresh on 24 August 2026. Where a number is ours, we say so and give the sample.
The word perimenopause now draws more United States searches than the word menopause. That reverses the order most coverage still assumes, and it happened inside five years.
- 301,000 United States searches a month for perimenopause, against 165,000 for menopause. That is 1.8 to 1 in favour of the prefix. Google Keyword Planner, 12-month average to July 2026, pulled 24 August 2026 by perigirlies.
- 343% growth in United States search interest in perimenopause over five years, comparing the 52 weeks to August 2022 with the 52 weeks to August 2026. Google Trends, 262 weekly points, measured by perigirlies.
- 71% growth for menopause over the same five years, and 10% for hot flashes. Perimenopause grew almost five times faster than menopause. Google Trends, measured by perigirlies.
- 21% to 55% the rise in perimenopause search interest expressed as a share of menopause search interest, first year against last. Google Trends, measured by perigirlies.
- 201,000 United States searches a month for perimenopause symptoms alone, which is more than the 165,000 for menopause as a whole term. Google Keyword Planner, 12-month average to July 2026.
Five years of search growth
We ran one Google Trends comparison covering the United States from August 2021 to August 2026, which returns 262 weekly points on a shared 0 to 100 scale. Because all five terms sit inside a single query they are directly comparable to each other. We then averaged the first 52 weeks and the last 52 weeks and took the change between them.
| Search term | 2021 to 2022 | 2025 to 2026 | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| perimenopause | 9.6 | 42.6 | +343% |
| hrt | 11.1 | 31.6 | +184% |
| menopause | 45.5 | 77.8 | +71% |
| menopause symptoms | 5.6 | 6.9 | +23% |
| hot flashes | 15.1 | 16.6 | +10% |
Figures are Google Trends relative interest, not raw search counts. Source: Google Trends, United States, 262 weekly points, measured by perigirlies on 24 August 2026.
Hot flashes barely moved over the same five years. The growth sits in the name of the stage itself, and in treatment, where hrt grew 184%.
Symptoms ranked by search demand
We took the 47 symptoms on our own perimenopause symptoms checklist and measured relative United States search interest for each over the 12 months to August 2026. Google Trends allows five terms per comparison, so we ran the sets with menopause hot flashes held in both as a shared anchor, which lets the two sets be read on one scale.
| Symptom | Relative interest | Share of the leader |
|---|---|---|
| Hot flashes | 54.7 | 100% |
| Weight gain | 31.4 | 57% |
| Anxiety | 19.5 | 36% |
| Hair loss | 15.4 | 28% |
| Vaginal dryness | 11.6 | 21% |
| Night sweats | 11.5 | 21% |
| Joint pain | 10.7 | 20% |
| Fatigue | 9.7 | 18% |
| Brain fog | 8.2 | 15% |
Google Trends, United States, 53 weekly points to August 2026, anchored on menopause hot flashes. Measured by perigirlies on 24 August 2026.
Hot flashes lead by a wide margin. We expected the opposite before we measured it, so it is worth stating plainly. Below it, weight gain, anxiety and hair loss add up to more than hot flashes on their own, and none of those three is what most people picture when they hear the word menopause.
What advertisers pay for these searches
Cost per click is a rough proxy for how commercially contested a topic is, because it is what advertisers actually bid. These are the top-of-page figures Google reports for the same 12-month window.
- $13.51 average cost per click for perimenopause treatment, at 12,100 searches a month. Google Keyword Planner, 12-month average to July 2026.
- $12.96 for hrt, at 90,500 searches a month, which is the most contested high-volume term in the set. Google Keyword Planner.
- $5.33 for perimenopause test, at 9,900 searches a month. Google Keyword Planner.
- $2.25 for perimenopause itself, despite 301,000 searches a month. Demand far outruns what advertisers are paying to meet it.
What we could not measure, and why
We are publishing this section because a statistics page that hides its gaps is not worth citing. Of the 94 symptom keywords we priced, 22 came back from Google Keyword Planner with no volume figure at all. For 8 of the 47 symptoms both wordings came back empty, including night sweats, anxiety, joint pain and vaginal dryness, which are four of the symptoms the condition is best known for.
It is not a sensitivity filter, and it is not a provider fault. We checked both. The bare term anxiety returns 301,000 searches a month, while perimenopause anxiety returns nothing, and heart palpitations returns nothing while perimenopause heart palpitations returns 2,900. Keyword Planner has arbitrary gaps for exact strings that fall outside an advertiser account's history.
That is why the symptom ranking above uses Google Trends rather than Keyword Planner. Trends has no such gaps, so it is the sounder instrument for comparing symptoms against each other. We would rather change instrument than publish a ranking with 8 of the 47 symptoms silently missing.
Method
Two sources, both named on every figure. Absolute monthly volumes come from Google Keyword Planner, United States, English, 12-month average to July 2026, adult keywords included so that intimate symptoms are not filtered out of the sample. Relative interest and all growth figures come from Google Trends, United States, on the windows stated in each table.
The symptom list is our own 47-item checklist, not an ad hoc selection, which is what makes the set replicable. Each symptom was mapped to the phrasing people actually search rather than the clinical label, so Exhaustion rest does not fix was measured as fatigue. Every figure on this page was pulled on 24 August 2026 and will be re-pulled each January.
Two limits worth stating. Google Trends reports relative interest on a 0 to 100 scale rather than raw counts, so a growth figure means growth in share of search, not in absolute searches. And this is one snapshot: it shows where demand sits now, not how fast any particular page reached it.
